Between 2004 and 2006, Alajuela saw an increase of 27 percent in foreign investors, with a total of 60 companies settling in Alajuela, including BLH Electronics, Precision Concepts Group, Riviana Food Group, Union Apparrel, United Airlines, and UPS.

The canes are crushed to make dulce, an unrefined sugar, and guaro, a sugarcane liquor, that visitors can sample at any of the local refineries. Alajuela has major pastoral areas, especially in the canton of San Carlos, where beef cattle ranches and dairy cow farms provide meat and dairy products to the nation.
